Sr. Provincial Office:
At the request of Mgr. Steins SJ, Vicar Apostolic of West Bengal, the Daughters of the Cross arrived in Calcutta in 1968 and opened a House at Bow Bazar Street for women and children. Three sisters took up the charge of women and children. On account of the high rent to be paid every month and the lack of space, the Home was transferred to St. Vincent’s Home, 68 Diamond Harbour Road, Kidderpore on 20th October 1873. By the help of St. Vincent de Paul and the other benefactors we were able to buy land in Kidderpore, beyond our expectation and opened a Home for children and women from broken families and slums and a boarding for Boys and also for the poor. Also a Home comprising of Asylum and Refuge. In 1877 St. Bridget’s Department – a Hostel for Ladies and a Crèche/Orphanage for Boys which was Christened in 1888 as St. Paul’s Nursery. In 1893 a new practical expression of Christian Charity manifested itself in the opening of a Hospital for incurable Diseases something unknown in Bengal. As the number increased a new building became an absolute necessity. With the generosity and the help of the public we were able to build St. Catherine’s Hospital and was blessed on 22nd February 1894. In 1907 the building the Daughters of the Cross occupied on their arrival at Kidderpore was declared dangerous and thus a new building was put in 1012. Later St. Paul’s Nursery with more than 100 little ones had to be enlarged. The sisters put up a new building on the spot occupied by St. Teresa’s School and it was inaugurated 0n 30th November 1912. In 1918, Lord Ronaldshay, the new Governor of Bengal awarded sister Josephine, the Provincial , the Kaiser-I-Hind Gold Medal in Official Recognition of the wonderful works of the Daughters of the Cross in the two fields of Christian Charity and Education.

Email: stcatherineshome@yahoo.com The Daughters of the Cross came to St. Vincent’s Home on the 18th October 1873 and started evangelising the people through their works of mercy and charity. Realizing the need to give adequate health care they decided to build a hospital. Decision was taken and the Archbishop of Calcutta Monsignor Goethals laid the foundation stone on 22nd Feb. 1894. The hospital comprised of four departments namely: St. Joseph’s, St. Lidwina’s, St. Rock’s, and The Cottage. The Hospital could accommodate a hundred patients. This hospital was for those affected by incurable diseases and the physically and mentally challenged. As years passed by more and more hospitals and nursing homes were established in the neighbourhood. Specialised treatment was demanded by the Medical Department of the Government. Thus, gradually St. Catherine’s Hospital was converted into St. Catherine’s Home, a home for the retired and the aged. And became a separate community 1998. |
