In the year 1880 when the Mgr. Goethals becomes the Archbishop of Calcutta, his attention was attracted to the miserable conditions of his flock in Howrah. Rev. Fr. Medlycott, a learned Portuguese was the parish priest of Our Lady of Happy Voyage Parish Howrah. To remedy the condition of the People in Howrah, Mgr. Goethals asked Sister Marie, the Superior of St. Vincent’s Home Kidderpore to open a school in Howrah. Permission was to be asked from the Mother House, Liege, but as just at that time a favourable opportunity presented itself for procuring a house in the locality where a school was most needed, and advised by the Mgr. Goethals not to let slip the chance from their hands, and assured that the permission would be granted.

The sisters opened a school in August 1880. For sometimes the sisters had to travel to Howrah daily which was not convenient for them. By October 1880, the permission to open a new house was granted where Sr. Wulburga the first superior of the house at No.3 Cullen Place. There was a European School under the patronage of St. Agnes and St. Elizabeth for the poor children. Later a two storied building in 1 King’s Road together with a smaller one belonging to the same landlord was offered to the sisters. Soon the schools began to flourish. But on 12th June 1897 the building except for the St. Elizabeth’s was damaged by a severe earthquake. A kind magistrate gave a portion of his residence to shelter the sisters while their building was under repair.

The schools were progressing rapidly when in the beginning of 1913 the landlord of the premises suddenly gave notice to the sisters to quit the house by 1st October the same year. Sisters were in dilemma and decided to buy the same building but of no use. Prayers were sent up from the whole province. By a most wonderful intervention of Divine Providence a kind friend undertook the negotiation intending to buy the building for him, but in reality for the sisters. It was successful, the landlord never dreamt of the trick played on him. The land was possessed by the sisters on 1st October 1913. No time was lost for the building of a new convent and school.

Later St. Elizabeth’s School was closed down and the land was taken by the Government for the building of the flyover. Now St. Agnes’ School has 1260 Students.
