Mamring Rangpo was home to many Catholics from the Terai region as they had gone there to work in the mines. Priests used to come from Terai to cater to their spiritual needs but the presence of sisters was always felt to constantly accompany them in their journey. The sisters first went to Mamring in 2002. Sisters used to visit the families and also teach in St. Xavier’s primary school which was run in the small Church premises itself. Later on the school was handed over to the sisters. In 2003 the sisters put up a school building and shifted the St. Xavier’s primary school into the new building and rechristened it as Ivana Memorial School, in memory of Sr. Mary Ivana. Sr. Ivana was known as the Mother Teresa of Siliguri. She looked after the destitutes, people affected with leprosy and tuberculosis with great love and care in Jesu Ashram. Her compassion flowed out to the poor little children who ran around the tea gardens without attending any school. She opened two primary schools in Bhuttabari and Bagracot so that these children could be introduced to the world of reading writing and arithmetic. This great soul returned to her Creator in 2002. Sisters felt it fitting to name the new school after Sr. Ivana as a tribute to her. In the year 2004 the convent was blessed.
Phones (Convent): +91 3595- 257565. Daughters of the Cross Convent was established on 29th Feb. 1980. Sr. Dibya Kishori F.C. and Sr. Mary Therese F.C were the pioneers to come to Naya Bazar, Jorethang. Fr. Charles Mukhia, the then Parish Priest of Jorethang warmly welcomed the new sisters. A few months later, Sr. Teresa Antony joined this community of two. From the beginning of this new mission, the sisters were engaged in the parish apostolate. They visited the families far and wide and gave the people the word of God. They bravely conquered the huge mountains on foot only with the faith as their strength. The sisters also helped in the primary school which was run by the fathers. In the beginning, Jorethang had only 25 Catholics. The presence of the sisters made a great difference in the lives of the people of Jorthang and the surrounding villages. Slowly the number of Catholics increased in this area. On 6th May 1993 the new Church was blessed in Jorethang. Initially the sisters did not have a convent but on 30th Dec. 1995, the sisters shifted their stay to the convent. On 16th March 1996, the new con vent was blessed by Fr. George SDB, in the presence of many. From the beginning, the sisters engaged themselves fully to the education and evangelization of the people of this area. They visit the families; conduct youth camps, catechism classes, seminars, retreats etc. to help the people. The contribution of the sisters is greatly acknowledged by the society in various ways. Sur Sadhana niketan, Navjyoti Hostel for girls etc. are also added to the existing apostolate of the community. St. Joseph’s Convent, Kurseong The Sisters in St. Helen’s Convent felt the need to provide good education to the children of the local people who were unable to pay the fees needed for St. Helen’s School. So in 1938, St. Joseph’s School was built and Sr. Mary Martha Former Headmistress of St. Helen’s was put In- Charge of the new school. Sr. Mary Martha took much interest and worked to raise the school to High School by getting it recognized in the year 1944 by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. St. Joseph’s School has played a significant role in the field of education in Kurseong. In 1997 the School was upgraded to the Higher Secondary section by the West Bengal Board of Higher Secondary. Sisters felt the need to bifurcate both the communities of St. Helen’s and St. Joseph’s so that sisters could cater better to the needs of the local people. Thus on 21st April 2015, on the anniversary of the beatification of Bl. Marie Therese the community of St. Joseph’s Convent Kurseong was canonically erected. |
