On 26th April 1936 four sisters, Sr. Marie Lutgarde, Sr Gerald Majella, Sr. Mary Charles and Sr. Hiltraud arrived here to take up residence at the new convent called Our Lady of Good Counsel Convent. Sr. Lutgarde was the first Superior of the Community. They were welcomed and introduced to the people by the founder, Father Bossaers SJ.

The sisters soon began the sharing of the mission with three gift for the people who would be part of their family from that day to this. a) Health care b) A nursery for orphans c) Education for girls. In the year 1937 the work began with struggle against the climate. Many fell victims of malaria and kalazar. The orphans were the indirect victims of the malaria and kalazar that then ranged everywhere in Terai. Sister Hiltraud fresh from Germany used to distribute medicine with love and prayer. The daily death fall due to malaria and Kalazar inspite of their dedication.

The dispensary was opened on 10th May 1937 and through this the sisters managed to reach hundreds of sick people. On 1st June 1938 Sr. Clement succumbed to the climate the first sister to die in Terai. The support and inspiration of Fr. Bossears the sisters were able to overcome the various obstacles. But far too soon within two years of their arrival the first sisters were changed due to their ruined health.

In December 1949 the nursery was closed due to financial difficulties and the children were given to good families. In the year 1950 the 3rd Std. was opened and in 1951 the 4th std was opened and over the years new class was introduced. By 1970 the class X and 1971 the first five girls wrote class X exam and among them Sr. Martina Headmistress of St. Mary’s is one of them. In the year 1973 the school was recognised as a Madhymic school and finally in the year 2000 St. Mary’s became a higher secondary school. Miracles in the past made St. Mary’s what is today, the Miracles of the life of devoted teachers, parents and zealous Daughters of the Cross.

The centre began on 1st May 2003. From 2003 to 2006 the centre arranged skill training programmes to empower women by enhancing their income generation avenues. The centre was known as the Human Empowerment Centre.

In April 2006 the centre was renamed community Health and Development Centre. The centre held programme for the tea garden labours and villagers on health education. In March 2010, Based on survey conducted, the aims and objectives of centre were redrawn and the centre was renamed NIRMET. In 2016 March the centre is renamed Navjeevan Institute of Rural Medical Education (NIRME). In 2019 The centre is renamed Navjeevan Institute of allied health education (NIAHE) The Centre has recognized by Bharat Sewak Samaj is a National Development Agency promoted by Government of India, Chennai Tambaram India. Government of West Bengal permitted to run two domains (GDA and F & B service steward) in 2022 to trained the candidates and provide jobs under Paschim Banga Society for Skill Development.

Navjeevan Swasthya Kendra was inaugurated in February 2010. Since the inauguration the center has been actively rendering health care services to the people of Dundajhar and the surrounding villages. The outreach programmes extend to twenty six villages around Dundajhar. The purpose of the health centre was to give awareness to the people on their health and encourage them to go for medical treatment.

Navjyoti Convent was established as a community on 15th August 2011. Sr. Geetha Cheriyan, Sr. Regina Kottackal, Sr. Shalini Kullu and Sr. Mousumi Mondal were the first members of the community. In February 2021 the NIRMET (Navjeevan Institute of Rural Medical Education and Training) section shifted from Gayaganga to Dundajhar as NIAHE (Navjeevan Institute of Allied Health Education). The inauguration of NIAHE was solemnized by Sr. Regi Mathew, Provincial Superior on 2nd of March 2021. NIAHE offers various undergraduate programmes in healthcare.
